Yesterday, I helped the Gowanus Canal Conservancy down by the “salt lot”, just south of the Carroll Street Bridge. (It’s where the Dept. of Sanitation stores road salt in the winter.)
By the water’s edge, we put a lot of fresh mulch around last year’s plantings. People way handier than me, built a chimney-like thing for swifts to make their nests on. It goes with the bird houses and bat boxes already up.
A bunch of kids from Brooklyn Tech’s Red Cross Club helped out. (In the video, you hear me saying “Be right back”, as I didn’t want them to think I was bailing on the hard work.) As we filled wheel-barrows, and shoveled, we got to talking; I realized I’d graduated high-school 30 years ago, next month. A girl said, “Wow..”, like she was meeting Moses.
As we worked, I saw a couple paddle by. Hopefully soon, I’ll to be able to put a Chestnut canoe in, but for now, I’ll pass.
Find any bodies?
