I wholeheartedly agree with Brooklyn Spoke, in its praise of Councilman Brad Lander. Lander has been out front in the PPW bike lane battle, supporting this safety-enhancing boon to the community.
Until the Bloomberg administration (just recently) decided to fight back, he was just about the only elected official out there supporting something his constituents overwhelmingly want.
Contrast his actions with those of Councilman Steven Levin, who has been nearly-invisible on this issue. Like Lander, he spoke in January at the public meeting in Park Slope, but unlike Lander, Levin did his best to act as if his microphone wasn’t working. As I recall, he asked some non-question, 100% pure pablum. I suspect it’s because his patrone, Vito Lopez, has told him to keep shtum.
Chuck Schumer, I give a semi-pass to. After all, he fucks the woman who is one of the lane’s principal opponents. But Levin? You’d think he’d say something about an initiative that has eliminated speeding on Prospect Park West.
“Marge, don’t discourage the boy! Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It’s what separates us from the animals! Except the weasel.”
