New York Magazine, recently published their list of the ‘50 best’ neighborhoods in New York. There was a little bit of teeth gnashing on Brooklyn Heights Blog, that the neighborhood ranked only #6. Adding insult to injury, Park Slope was #1.
I like Brooklyn Heights more, but – it’s a pretty subjective thing – and nowhere is perfect. That being said, their calculus seems to have some serious flaws. Forest Hills, where I grew up, isn’t on there at all. I think, most people would agree it’s a very nice place to live. Nate Silver, of fivethirtyeight fame, did the math. Now, I have nothing but respect for him. During the run-up to the presidential election, he kept me sane; but if I had a model of the solar system, that didn’t account for, oh, I don’t know, Jupiter or Saturn, I think I’d have go back and look at the algorithm that produced my model.
I took the movie and pics this past Saturday. The movie is a couple of blocks from where I grew up, and the church is across from Flagpole Park.
This is Eddie’s. The guy in the back with the gray hair, is the owner, Joe (Giuseppe). A lot of people think he’s “Eddie”, but he’s actually Eddie’s son, and has known me, from the time I was about five or six. I remember the first time I placed my own order at the counter. I wanted an ice-cream soda with sprinkles in it. He tried to dissuade me, but I insisted. It was, I think, the first time in my life I heard Italian, as he shook his head, and muttered to himself, sotto-voce.
