This kind of snow is called graupel. It’s like Dippin’ Dots, and sounds like being inside a popcorn popper. It bounces off of you. It is very prone to avalanching. Here are a couple of movies I took of it yesterday at Alta. If I had the camera running a little longer, you would have heard big ‘booms’ as they did avalanche control.
Little Cottonwood Canyon is closed until at least noon for control work, and up there, no one is allowed outside (they call that ‘interlodging’.) I’m heading to Brighton. Later...
