No, it’s not a mirage. The TBM for the Second Avenue Subway has actually arrived (piece by piece).
Here is the cutterhead; blades not attached yet, but sitting pretty inside the Launch Box. The eponymous blog has some more amazing pics. The head is painted yellow in honor of the Q train, which will what initially serve the new route.
The MTA has also released its quarterly report on construction progress. One item of work that caught my eye, was on page 6:
Continued removal of existing “El” train brick and concrete piers.
So the line that was torn down nearly 70 years ago, in anticipation of this one, is still making its presence felt.
This was taken just north of the 34th Street station. The 42nd Street station can be seen in the distance. That’s the Daily News Building to the west.
