In light of Rep. Peter King’s proposal to make it illegal to carry guns within 1,000 feet of any elected official, I called his office and asked that my name also be added to the list.
The conversation with the staffer who took the call went, according to my notes, like this:
“Hi, I live in New York and I read about Rep. King’s proposal to make it illlegal to carry a gun within 1,000 feet of a representative. I feel the same way. Can I get added to the list?”
“I’d like to be on the list of people who want to be 1,000 feet away from a gun.”
“Well, we'll see what we can do.”
“I'm serious,”, I said. “It can be 535 people, plus one... me. What would the harm be in that?"
“Thank you for calling the Congressman’s office.”
“Wait, don’t you want to get my name and address so you can add me to the list?”
I then gave him my name and address, but I couldn’t quite hear the sound of him typing.
“And I’d like the Congressman to respond to my request”, I said.
I urge everyone to conatct Rep. King’s office and make a similar request for themselves. The phone number is 202-225-7896,
