Got home at about 1:45 AM, having just seen the Baseball Project at Maxwell’s.
It’s Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate/Miracle 3), Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3), Scott McCaughey (Minus 5/R.E.M. sideman), and Peter Buck and/or Mike Mills from R.E.M. Wynn and McCaughey had an idea to make an album about their shared love of baseball.
A song about Willie Mays, a song name-checking every person who has ever pitched a perfect game, a song about Harvey Haddix (check out link – very cool).
I hadn’t been to Maxwell’s in about a dozen years, and forgot how good a place it is to see a show. $13, and you are in the thick of things (see below).
The band was great, relaxed, and Mike Mills got to rock out like he used to back in Athens. He seemed very down-to-earth. He wouldn’t even let the bartender comp him a drink. Somehow, I don’t think Keith Richards or John Entwistle would be like that.
As close as you can get:
The last part of Amphetamine (was running out of space on the SD card).
A brief stop at the bar, then “The Ballad of John and Yoko”
I need a bigger SD card. Wow – a great gig! For video I shot of Steve Wynn back in February, check here.
"Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon and Pugwash’s Thomas Walsh have teamed up for a concept album about cricket under the guise of The Duckworth Lewis Method." Inspiration? Also, I think John Entwistle is dead but I'm sure he would still be good company at a bar ;)
