I’m pretty sure the picture (click to enlarge) was taken in the spring of 1981 — the year I graduated. The arrow points to me with my Forest Hills/Briarwood posse, wearing my knapsack with both straps on my shoulders – a style years ahead of its time.
Stuyvesant had no ‘yard’, so 15th was basically where everyone hung out after school. This was before car alarms, so leaning against or sitting on top of a car, wasn’t an issue, and I don’t recall anyone ever getting hassled over it. Stuyvesant moved to much fancier digs in Battery Park City in 1992, and the old building is now used for other educational purposes. (At the time this pic was taken, Battery Park City was nothing but a giant dirt and sand lot.)
Speaking of posh, Google Streetview show that like a lot of Manhattan, the neighborhood has gone from something that wouldn’t have been out of place in an episode of Kojak, to something a bit more ‘refined’. Nicer cars, no more boarded-up buildings, a bunch of trees now give shade to the street… and none of those meddling kids.
