Not a lot of powder to be had on this trip, but having a lot of fun. I’m with my friend/colleague, ‘non-Chinese J.’ It’s his first time on skis, and he already wants to come back. Cool.
The last couple of times I was out here, I saw a bunch of people whose skiing I admired, on Surface skis. It’s a local SLC manufacturer. Today, they had a tent up at Alta, and I got to demo their “Live Life” rockered skis – and I think I had a skiing-life changing experience.
Rocker skis are shaped the opposite of a traditional, ‘cambered’ ski, kind of like a canoe.
On the rep’s recommendation, I skied the 181cms, which I was a little wary of - my current skis are 170s, but they turned on a dime – much better (I hate to say), than my Volkl Mantras. They also busted through crud better. I didn’t have much powder to try them on, but from everything I read, and what people say, their ‘float’ is almost unbelievable. What can I say… Mantras, we’ll always have Utah.
